♦ Answer the following questions.
1. Who were waiting for the rescue boat?
A sick mother, her pregnant daughter, and her son were waiting for the rescue boat.
2. How much space did the boat have?
The boat had space left for only one person.
3. What did they quarrel about?
They quarrelled about who should get into the boat. Each one wanted the other to be saved instead of themselves.
4. What did the poet find strange about their quarrel?
The poet found it strange that they did not fight to save themselves. They fought to save one another.
5. Why did each member of the family refuse to board the boat?
Each member of the family refused to board the boat because they wanted the others to be saved instead of themselves.
6. How does the poet explain their attitude?
The poet explains that tragedy makes human beings selfless and fearless in the face of death.
♦ Activity 1
1. Let us turn this poem into a skit of two scenes and perform it inthe class. Scene 1 and the beginning of Scene 2 are given below.
a. Read it.
• Daughter (holding her belly): Yes, Mom. But how can we all go? I can’t move fast.
• Son (looking outside): It’s water everywhere. It’s not safe to stay here.
We should leave soon.
• Mother: I’m too weak to walk. You two should go. I’ll stay. Perhaps the water level will decrease in a day or two.
• Daughter (shaking her head): No, Mom! We can’t leave you here. We shall all go together.
• Son (firmly): Yes, none of us should stay back. We will leave together.
• Mother (softly): But what if I slow you down?
• Son: We will help you, Mom. We are stronger together.
• Daughter (nodding): Yes, we will stay together and take care of each other.
• Mother (holding their hands): Alright, we will all leave together.
• Son (nodding): Let’s get ready and go.
• Daughter (smiling): Yes, we can.
b. Here is the beginning of the Scene 2. Sit in groups and complete it.
• Mother (weak but firm): Listen, my children. I am old and weak, and I’ve had a long life. You two need to be safe. One of you should take the boat.

Answer:
• Mother (weak but firm): Listen, my children. I am old and weak, and I’ve had a long life. You two need to be safe. One of you should take the boat.
• Daughter (shaking her head): No, Mom! You must go. You are sick and cannot survive here.
• Son (quickly): No, Sister. You are pregnant. You must go. The future depends on you.
• Mother (raising her hand): Stop, both of you. I cannot go. My time has passed.
• Daughter (tearfully): But I cannot leave you, Mother. I want you to be safe.
• Son (firmly): And I cannot leave either of you. I will stay back.
• Mother (softly): My children, why do you quarrel like this?
• Daughter (looking at both): We quarrel not to save ourselves, but to save each other.
• Son (nodding): Yes, we are ready to sacrifice.
• Mother (with emotion): This is strange, yet beautiful. Tragedy has made us selfless, and death no longer frightens us.
(The family holds hands tightly, standing together as the boat waits. The scene closes with silence and the sound of rushing water.)
