Yes. In Kerala, all children get a chance to go to school. But in other states, children living in remote villages do not get a chance to go to school. 

• 'But a sadness lingered in their hearts.' What could be the reason? 
The reason for their sadness is that they could not go to school. 

♦ A Thirst to Read 
• Why did the children in the village look curiously at the children in the school bus? 
The children in the village never got a chance to go to school in a school bus. So they looked curiously at the children in the school bus.

• Who may be the lady? 
The lady may be a social activist.

She came there to teach the illit­erate children. 

• What might be in her bag? Can you guess?

World of Wonders
• Why did the children keep watching until Didi's red dupatta disappeared? 
The children were so excited because it was the first time in their lives that somebody had gifted them books. So they kept watching until her red dupatta disappeared. 

Our Didi
• How did the children beautify Didi's seat? 
They beautified Didi's seat with a chair, a piece of carpet and some curtains. 

• What happened to Didi? Can you guess? 
I guess Didi may be sick. 

• Diary 
Didi did not come for many days. Taju became very sad. He wrote his
feelings in his diary. Write the likely diary.

An unhappy day.
Didi didn't come. A week passed. Decorated her seat with chair, carpet and curtains. All ready. Yet she didn't come. Feels so empty. Missing her stories. Discussed with Ninnu and Taju. Decided to go in search of her. Oh God, please help us. 

A Clue
• How did the children find Didi's house? 
They noticed a red dupatta on a terrace and ran to that house. Didi was lying in the bed there. 

• What could be Didi's feelings on seeing the children? 
Didi will be very happy and sur­prised to see the children. 

The Magic of Words
• How did Didi's arrival change the children's lives?
Every evening, they sat with Didi to read and laugh. They had so much fun with Didi and the books. Their life changed a lot after the arrival of Didi. 

• What is the message of the story? 
The message of the story is that if children experience the real joy of reading, there will be no limit to their happiness. 

Activity 02 Thoughts 
Ninnu saw children going to school in a school bus. Write her thoughts.

How lucky they are!
They are going to school. I don't know what they are doing in the school.
They have uniforms, bags and books. They know reading and writing. I wish I could also read and write. Then I can read stories and write my name. Someday I will also go to school. 

Activity 03 Rearrange
Some sentences from the story are given below. The words are jumbled. Rearrange the words to make meaningful sentences.

Activity 04 Prepositions 
Look at the words underlined in the following sentences. Here 'at' and 'for' add meaning to the sentences.

Look at the picture and fill in the sentences with suitable words from the brackets.

This is Sminu's room. Sminu is standing in front of the table. Her ball is between two tables. Her pet rabbit is jumping over the table. Her cat is lying under the table.

Read the following news report and answer the questions below. 

Sathi M V is on a reading spree 
Kanhangad: A voracious reader, Sathi is living with a rare disorder, making it difficult for her to walk. She has been bedridden for the past 25 years. In spite of the disease, she loves reading. Sitting in bed, she has read more than 2000 books and reviewed them. She says happily, "My father, Civic Kodakkad, is the person who led me to the wonderful world of reading. He
also motivated me to write articles." Her biography, 'Read, Read and Forget Pain', was included in the textbooks as a motivational story. She has a collection of more than 400 letters from famous writers. She has received numerous awards, including the 'Sarga Prathibha National Award'. Her notable works include 'Gulika Varacha Chitrangal' and 'Kalvarayile Malagha.'

Activity 03

Look at the pictures given below. (Textbooks Page: 85, 86)
Write the events related to the pictures. Give a suitable title. 
Anaya in Wonder Land
Picture 1: Anaya was very fond of reading. She used to go to the nearby library on holidays. It was a Saturday. She entered the library and searched for good storybooks. 

Picture 2: Then the librarian handed her a picture storybook with a lovely cover page. "You will find it very interesting", she said. "Thank you, ma'am," Ananya said. 

Picture 3: Ananya opened the book. She saw a bunny on the first page. "Hi Ananya", the bunny said! "Hi, bunny", she replied. "Follow me if you can." Bunny jumped out of the book and ran. Ananya ran after him.

Picture 4: Bunny entered through a magic door. Ananya followed him. "Wow!" Ananya wondered. What an amazing sight! It was a wonderland with stars all around.

Picture 5: She saw beautiful birds there. "Hi, friends, this is Ananya, our new friend," Bunny introduced her to his friends. "Hi, Ananya, please join us," the rooster said. "I wish I could fly like you," Ananya replied. "Why not? Let's fly." A small angel appeared and lifted Ananya into the sky. 

Picture 6: Ananya laughed in joy. She started fly­ing high. She saw butterflies, dragonflies, birds and animals flying around her. They were all laughing and play­ing. Ananya shouted in joy. 

Picture 7: The librarian came and asked, "What happened, Ananya? Are you alright?" "Where are Bunny and his friends?" she asked the librarian. "Oh, nor were you dreaming?" the librarian asked. 

Picture 8: Ananya felt ashamed. She couldn't believe it was a dream. Then she smiled. "Anyway, it was a beautiful story. I enjoyed it," she whispered to herself.
