In northern Kerala, the month of Thulam is celebrated by the arrival of Theyyakkolams. They represent wealth, prosperity and flourishing of the village life and culture. They are adorned with traditional costumes and anklets, entering the sacred forest shrines called Kavus. Theyyattam is a mixture of various traditional art forms, including folk music, folk dancing, drawing and traditional sculpture. Even though the number of Theyyakkolams in the northern villages is not known exactly, it is estimated between three hundred and four hundred. Paddy fields and rice farming are culturally related to Theyyakkolams. The costumes, headgear and facial make-up used for performing Theyyam are all made from materials obtained from nature. Crown and other headgears are made from Kavunginpala and Kuruthola, etc.
