Std 6: ICT 09: Aerial Distance - Questions and Answers
♦ Let’s Get to Know Marble
• By clicking and dragging the globe with the left mouse button, you can view it from all sides. Clicking with the right button allows you to rotate it left or right.
• The globe's size can be adjusted using the mouse scroll wheel or the
zoom tool in the window.

MARBLE
Marble is a virtual globe software. It shows three-dimensional shapes of the Earth and some other planets. Marble is also used to calculate the air distance between two places, plan travel routes, find the latitude and longitude of a place, and explore three-dimensional landscapes.
♦ Latitude and Longitude
Two types of lines on the globe: lines running from top to bottom connecting the poles, and horizontal lines encircling the globe. These imaginary lines on the map help us pinpoint the exact location of any object or region on Earth. The vertical lines are called latitude lines, while the horizontal ones are known as longitude lines.

♦ Find Capital City of a Place
Finding a Location Using Marble Software
• In the Marble window, click on the "Search" tab on the left side. In the text box that appears, type the name of the place you want to find and press Enter.
• Use the slider to zoom in on the globe until the location is clearly visible.

♦ Measuring Air Distance
Measuring Aerial Distance Between Two Places on a Marble
• Use the search function in Marble to find the starting location for which you want to measure the distance
• Then, right-click on the box next to the name of that place and click on the “Add Measure Point” option.
• Next, find the destination location by searching for it in the search window.
• Then, right-click on the box next to the name of that place and click on the "Add Measure Point" option again.
• The aerial distance between the two places will now be visible on the map.

♦ Let's Assess
♦ Find the following places using Marble software and find their latitude/longitude
(a) Pune (b) Amravati
(c) Nagpur (d) Hong Kong
Answer:
a) 18.5204° N latitude and 73.8567° E longitude
b) 20.9374° N latitude and 77.7797° E longitude
c) 21.1458° N latitude and 79.0882° E longitude
b) 22.3193° N latitude and 114.1694° E longitude

♦ Using Marble, find the aerial distance from any place in your district to Hong Kong.
Answer: The aerial distance from Thiruvananthapuram to Hong Kong is approximately 4,238 kilometres.
Thiruvananthapuram: 8.5241° N latitude and 76.9366° E longitude
