Std 8 English Unit III The Trail of Science - Lesson 01 Talking of Science - Textual Questions and Answers & Activities
Talking of Science - Questions and Answers

♦ While we read
1. Do you think that asking questions is fundamental to all scientific exploration? How do questions move science forward?
Yes, I think so. Asking questions is the heart of all scientific exploration. Science begins when someone asks "Why?" or "How?" Curiosity leads scientists to observe, think, and search for answers.

2. 'Curiosity is at the heart of science.' Do you agree?
Yes, I completely agree. Curiosity alone can drive us to discover the truth.

3. How does observation help us understand natural phenomena?
Observation plays a key role in scientific discovery. When we observe natural events closely and with interest, we begin to understand the reasons behind them. Observation helps scientists notice things that others may ignore and find explanations for how the world works.

4. What are the unsolved mysteries you would like to solve, with the help of science?
I would like to solve mysteries like how the universe began and whether life exists on other planets. Science can help us find answers by observing and using tools.

5. Do you want to become a scientist? How will you equip yourself for this?
Yes, I want to become a scientist to learn how things work. I will stay curious, read books, and learn from teachers and my surroundings.

♦ Let's rewind

1. "Books remain a source of reliable information, unlike most of what we get online." Do you agree? Give reasons.
Yes, I agree. Books are carefully written, edited and checked by experts before they are published. This makes them more trustworthy. In contrast, a lot of information online may be unverified or false because anyone can post content without checking facts.

2. How does asking questions help in developing our understanding?
Asking questions helps us think deeply and search for answers. It makes us curious and leads to learning. When we ask why or how something happens, we begin to explore, observe, and discover new ideas, which improves our understanding of the world.

3. Why does Dr Ajith Parameswaran say that anyone can become a scientist?
Dr Ajith says that a great scientist can come from anywhere. He believes that you don't have to be born special to become a scientist. If someone is curious, hardworking, and willing to learn, they too can become a scientist, no matter where they come from.

4. What, in your opinion, are the essential qualities of a good scientist? Mention any two.
A good scientist must be curious and hardworking. Curiosity helps them ask important questions, and hard work helps them do careful research and experiments to find answers. These two qualities are necessary for making new discoveries.

5. Do you now agree that science is entirely different from mere opinion? Why?
Yes, I agree. Science is based on facts, observations, and experiments, while opinions are just personal beliefs without proof. Science helps us find the truth through evidence, but opinions can be wrong if they are not based on facts.

♦ Let's recall and recreate

• Clear, focused questions
• Active listening by the interviewer
• Opportunities for the interviewee to elaborate
• Respectful and professional tone
• Logical flow of topics

B. Now, prepare a few relevant questions for an interview with a prominent person in your locality:
You can choose a teacher, doctor, farmer, artist, business person, or social worker.
Sample Questions:

6. What advice would you give young people who want to enter this field?
7. How do you think the community can support doctors better?
8. Can you share a memorable experience that made you proud of your work?

C. Conduct mock interviews in pairs:
One student will be the interviewer, and the other will act as the local personality.
Practise the interview using natural conversation, gestures, and expressions.
Take turns and give feedback to each other.
You may even record or perform the best interviews in front of the class.

• Interviewer: Good morning, Doctor! Thank you for joining us today.

♦ Activity 3
♦ Human-animal conflicts and extreme weather events such as flash floods and landslides are on the increase today.
A. Try to list some of the probable causes of these events.
• Misuse of land
• Heavy rainfall leads to floods and landslides
• Deforestation and destruction of natural habitats
• Rapid urbanization and unplanned construction
• Encroachment into forest and wildlife areas
• Overgrazing and overexploitation of natural resources
• Pollution and climate change
• Mining and quarrying in fragile zones
• Poor waste management and water contamination
• Global warming leading to erratic rainfall
• Dam construction and river diversion

B. List some mysteries of Nature that remain unsolved. Write a short note on any one of these mysteries.
• Why is there more matter than antimatter?
• What causes Ball Lightning?
• Where is all the lithium?
• Why do we sleep?
• Auroras (Northern and Southern Lights)
• How does gravity work?
• Where is everyone?
• What is dark matter made of?
• How did life begin?
• How do plate tectonics work?
• How do animals migrate?
• What is dark energy?

♦ Ball Lightning
Ball lightning is one of the strangest natural phenomena. Witnesses describe glowing, floating spheres of light appearing during thunderstorms. They can last for several seconds, move unpredictably, and sometimes even pass through windows or walls. Unlike ordinary lightning, which is a quick discharge, ball lightning behaves more like a glowing orb.
