To open the LibreOffice Writer

Open the LibreOffice Writer window using Applications → Office → LibreOffice Writer

♦ Arrangement of Letters on the Keyboard
The Inscript keyboard vowels (except ഋ) are arranged on the left side of the keyboard and the consonants on the right side.

♦ When letters join

Compound letters are combinations of more than one letter. While typing in Malayalam, use the 'Chandrakala (്)' to join the letters.

To Change the Keyboard Language: To change the keyboard language, click on the Keyboard Layout Indicator on the top panel of the computer screen. From the menu that appears, select the required keyboard language layout. For example, to switch from the English layout to Malayalam, change "English (India, with rupee) en" to "Malayalam (Poorna, extended InScript) ml" in the menu. Easy Language Switching Keyboard languages can be quickly switched using shortcut keys. Try pressing and holding the Super Key, then pressing the Spacebar, and start typing.

♦ Let's Type in Malayalam 

Click on the keyboard layout indicator on the top panel of the computer screen, select the required keyboard language (Malayalam) layout from the menu that appears. Select a font and start typing.

Practice typing by paying attention to the colour combinations of keys and fingers shown in the picture. This means that you should practice typing the keys marked in red using the index finger of your left hand.

While typing in Malayalam, when two characters are written close together, they may merge into a compound letter or a special symbol. To keep them separate, insert a Zero Width NonJoiner between them.

♦ Different Ways to Type

There are many ways to type in Malayalam. You can type in English and convert it to Malayalam. You may already know that typing on a phone can be done using both voice input and handwriting recognition.
